Last year we learned the identity of Captain Marvel in the MCU. While things have been mostly quiet on that front since then, this evening at San Diego Comic-Con we learned a lot more about the upcoming film. Quite possibly the most surprising thing was that Captain Marvel will technically be a period piece, taking place in the1990s, well before every other movie in the MCU, with the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger. However, that was far from the only thing confirmed at Marvel’s panel. The rumor that Nick Fury would be in the film has been confirmed, as has the villain of the piece. Captain Marvel will mark the MCU debut of the classic nemesis the Skrulls.
The Skrulls have been a longtime villain within Marvel Comics. Mostly, they’re known for their ability to shapeshift which has allowed them to wreak havoc on the Marvel Universe in many classic storylines, including Secret Invasion. We don’t have any details on exactly how the Skrulls will play into the story, we did see some basic concept art which showed them off, looking more or less how fans of the comics will remember them.

In addition to naming the bad guys of the movie, the time period was also revealed. As a movie taking place sometime in the 1990s that means that Captain Marvel will predate the events of the first Iron Man movie, but not by nearly the decades of time of the first Captain America. What makes the situation all the more interesting is that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was confirmed to not just be in the film, but recent rumors that he would have a major role were also confirmed. This means that the end credits sequence of Iron Man was not Fury’s first encounter with super powered people.
While Nick Fury will appear in the new movie he won’t look exactly like the man we know currently in the MCU as it was revealed on stage that he will be sans eye patch. The Nick Fury of the 1990s still has both his eyes. Of course, now we’re forced to wonder if that will change by the end of the movie.
