Evangeline Lilly Has Second Thoughts About Wasp Solo Film Because of Captain Marvel

After a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios is finally set to release its first female-led film with the March release of Captain Marvel. And now, despite having previously been opposed to leading her own film, another MCU hero is reconsidering her character’s future on the big screen.

In a recent interview, actress Evangeline Lilly was asked if she would be interested in headlining a solo Wasp film after the success of Ant-Man and the Wasp. At the time, the actress was initially against the idea, explaining that she felt it was important to keep the tiny duo together on the big screen, citing their comic book counterparts.

However, after seeing bits and pieces of Captain Marvel, Lilly is beginning to lean into the possibility of a Wasp solo film. And the reasoning behind the change is pretty simple. While appearing at Salt Lake City’s FanX convention over the weekend, Lilly explained that the art she has seen for Captain Marvel just “looks really fun.”

Lilly was on-hand at the convention to promote her book series, The Squickerwonkers, when she addressed her previous comments.

“The original comic books, Ant-Man and the Wasp are a duo,” said Lilly. “And they’re always a duo. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like you almost never see them not together. And I’ve been asked, ‘Would you like to do a standalone Wasp film?’ And I keep saying, ‘Well, I don’t think so, because they’re partners, and they were always partners, and they’re original founding members of the Avengers and they belong side by side.’ And now I’ve been seeing posters coming out for Captain Marvel, and I’m like, ‘Ohh, hang on a minute! That looks really fun!’”

While it remains to be seen what Marvel Studios has planned for Phase Four and beyond, Kevin Feige has recently confirmed Captain Marvel is just the beginning of more female-led films headed to the MCU. One of those, of course, is Black Widow, which recently secured Berlin Syndrome helmer Cate Shortland. As to other potential films? There are a plethora of female characters for the studio to further develop, and, hey, if the Wasp can’t lead her own film, she can certainly join her fellow Marvel actresses in a Lady Liberators film.

Director Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and The Wasp stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Randall Park and Walton Goggins. The film will release on Digital HD October 2 and on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 16.
