Jude Law has provided some insight on his character’s dynamic with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel along with offering clues about the broader themes in the upcoming MCU film.
The veteran actor, who plays the mysterious leader of Starforce, the interstellar peacekeeping team Carol serves on, will serve as a mentor to the high-flying superhero coming to terms with her Kree heritage.
“These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” explained Law in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”
The increased attention Law’s character gives Larson’s Danvers will be a source of tension within the team.
“There’s a lot and back and forth that comes with the two of them, which kind of creates a little bit of tension with the rest of Starforce,” elaborated Law. “Like, ‘Why do they have a special relationship, and why isn’t it me?’”
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
