Marvel’s Inhumans will premiere in IMAX before heading to TV in 2017

For the first time in television history, a studio will premiere the first two episodes of a new series in IMAX theaters before bringing it to television for the remainder of its season.

Marvel announced yesterday that its newest live-action series on ABC, Inhumans, would only be available to view at theaters worldwide for two weeks before it has its debut on the network. The version of the show that audiences will see, filmed entirely with digital IMAX cameras, will be slightly different from the version that will air on ABC.

Inhumans “will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family,” and follow the adventures of a race of superhumans with “diverse and singularly unique powers,” according to Marvel. The Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and debuted in Fantastic Four No. 45 in 1965.

Inhumans isn’t the only new Marvel show that will premiere next year, either. Netflix will debut its newIron Fist and Punisher series, whileHulu will stream the first season of Josh Schwartz’s upcoming Runaways show. On top of that, Agents of Shield will return to ABC and Jessica Jones may be back for a second season on Netflix.

Neither ABC or Marvel has announced any casting for the show, but more details are expected to be released closer to the premiere.
